5 Fun Facts About It’s A Wonderful Life

1. James Stewart’s First Film after World War II: This was James Stewart’s first film after serving in World War II. His performance in “It’s a Wonderful Life” was influenced by his real-life experiences during the war, adding depth to his portrayal of George Bailey.
2. Improvised Snow: The film used a new method for creating artificial snow. Previously, painted cornflakes were used in movies, but they were quite noisy underfoot. Capra wanted to record live sound, so a new snow effect was created using a mix of foamite (from fire extinguishers), soap, and water. This innovation was awarded a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
3. Based on a Christmas Card: The film’s inspiration came from a Christmas card. Philip Van Doren Stern wrote a short story called “The Greatest Gift” and couldn’t find a publisher. He sent it out as a 21-page Christmas card to friends, and it eventually caught the attention of a producer at RKO Pictures, leading to the creation of the film.
